Released on June 18, the latest SCFI closed at 3,121.69 points with a week-on-week gain of 136.47 points; the index has risen for eight consecutive weeks and broken the 3,000-point threshold, boosted by carriers’ rate hikes and peak season surcharges, with trans-Pacific US trades leading the rally as weekly freight rates for 40-foot containers to both US West and East Coasts surged over 8% amid acute space shortage pushing shipper bookings to mid-July, and only the US Southwest lane is set for a minor rate cut in July, while rates for Europe and Mediterranean routes climbed concurrently and intra-Asia near-sea routes maintained stable performance; Middle East Gulf routes moved against the upward trend as eased US-Iran tensions raised market expectations of unimpeded vessel passage through the Strait of Hormuz and dragged down risk surcharges, albeit supporting facilities for smooth channel navigation are yet to be put in place, and although restocking demand in Europe and the US, port congestion and capacity control are propping up the Q3 peak-season freight market, the month-end urgent shipment rush to the US will come to an end, and coupled with capacity flowing back from the Middle East and steady deliveries of newly-built container ships, the sustainability of freight rate growth after July is faced with major uncertainties.
