Maersk Announces Strait of Hormuz Surcharge of USD 1,000 per Container

Amid heightened security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, Maersk has announced the advance introduction of relevant surcharges. A surcharge of USD 1,000 per container will be levied on cargo transported via the strait, to cover costs including war risk insurance premiums and risk compensation for seafarers. Additionally, an emergency surcharge will apply to import and export cargo destined for or originating from multiple Middle Eastern ports including Iraq and Kuwait (excluding Salalah, Oman): USD 1,800 for a 20ft container, USD 3,000 for a 40ft container, and USD 3,800 for reefer containers and other special equipment units. The charge offsets extra expenses such as alternative routing and temporary storage.
Suspension of vessel transits through the strait remains in effect. Maersk emphasises that the advance publication of the surcharges does not signal an imminent resumption of sailings; the measure is intended to help customers with budget planning and supply chain arrangements. Shipping analyst Lars Jensen views this move as prudent risk management and states it does not point to a near-term restart of operations. Industry forecasts suggest that should shipping resume in future, surcharges for high-risk trade lanes may become a regular cost recovery mechanism for liner carriers. Shippers and freight forwarders are advised to closely monitor policy updates and draw up contingency plans in advance.
