The shipping market is showing clear divergence: freight rates on TransPacific routes keep climbing, while rates for AsiaEurope lanes keep falling.
On TransPacific routes, freight rates continue to surge, driven by shipping disruptions stemming from the MiddleEast conflict, robust demand on the US East Coast, and typhoon activities in East Asia. Per WCI statistics, AsiaLos Angeles rates rose 6% to USD 6,244 per FEU, and AsiaNew York rates increased 10% to USD 8,706 per FEU. Pricehike pressure has passed from the spot market into longterm contract space. Average longterm contract rates for US West and US East coasts have both climbed roughly 40% since late February, strengthening carriers’ bargaining power.
By contrast, AsiaEurope freight rates remain on a downward trajectory. ShanghaiRotterdam rates fell 5% monthonmonth to USD 4,425 per FEU; ShanghaiGenoa rates dropped 8% to USD 5,080 per FEU. Amid sluggish demand, the market widely questions whether the planned FAK rate hike (targeting USD 6,7007,100) rolled out by some carriers for AsiaMediterranean routes can be sustained.
