Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to disrupt global shipping. Risks persist for vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Compounded by port congestion and further Panama Canal capacity restrictions in September (daily transits cut to 32 vessels), effective shipping capacity has contracted notably. In late August, freight rates for 40ft containers from Shanghai to Jeddah exceeded USD 10,200, jumping by more than USD 3,000 within half a month. Capacity for US Eastbound trades dropped 9% monthonmonth. Carriers plan to implement rate increases of USD 400500 per 40ft container for September, with some quotations also topping USD 10,000.This round of rate hikes stems from four overlapping supplyside factors: geopolitical disruption, port backlogs, dual canal constraints, and intentional space control by carriers, rather than a surge in cargo demand.Freight rates are expected to stay resistant to declines in the short term. From late Q3 to early Q4, Middle East rates are projected to fluctuate within USD 9,00011,000, while US East Coast rates will range between USD 9,50010,500.Shippers are advised to lock in competitive space for US East Coast cargo before the end of August. For lowvalue cargo destined for the Middle East, shipment deferral or sealand intermodal alternatives are recommended. Book containers 710 days in advance to avoid rollovers. A meaningful market inflection point is unlikely until after October, when the seasonal low season arrives and waterway risks ease.
