In the post-Golden-Week market, the picture is not one of an across-the-board shortage of slots, but rather a divergence by trade lane. On the eastbound transpacific, blank sailings account for 49% of capacity, leaving space relatively tight. Carriers are exercising capacity discipline to defend rate levels, and FAK rates are showing a "low-first, high-later" pattern—so urgent cargo needs to secure slots 3–4 weeks in advance. On the Asia-Europe and Mediterranean lanes, the resumption of Suez transits and shorter round voyages have boosted effective capacity, putting downward pressure on freight rates. After cutting rates to fill vessels, carriers are testing the waters with attempted hikes—but whether those increases stick will depend on volume support. Across the Atlantic, blank sailings make up just 18%, so the impact is limited—but shippers should guard against knock-on rebookings triggered by cancellations on other lanes. Forwarders should keep a close eye on whether additional blank sailings are added within seven days of departure, whether contract space is being cut, and on schedule reliability and port congestion. By cross-referencing FAK quotes with actual space availability, they can plan bookings and shipments well ahead of time.
